Wicked Fun At Great Wolf Lodge New England

As a Ask-A-Mom panelist for Great Wolf Lodge Williamsburg, I had the pleasure of attending the media preview/grand opening of Great Wolf Lodge New England. We spent 4 days and 3 nights at the lodge and had an awesome time! We arrived Wednesday afternoon after a 13-hour drive from Newport News. (We did stop a few times and ran into traffic, so the ride would have been around 9.5 – 10 hours if we drove straight there.) We were so excited to get out of the car – to see the lodge and to stretch our legs! Emily at the front desk was very sweet and welcoming (as was the rest of the staff).  It was great to see another lodge and compare how it differed from my home lodge in Williamsburg. The New England lodge feels more open and spacious and reminds me of being on a cruise ship due to the layout. I love the style and set-up of the lodge. One major difference as soon as you walk in is the fire place placement and there is no clock tower. They do have a giant tree with a bear and a forest friends show that is very interactive and fun. (SEE VIDEO OF THE SHOW)

We stayed in the family suite, which accommodates up to 5 people. The size was smaller than our lodge in Williamsburg, but it is enough space to be comfortable without being on top of one another. The standard suites are located in the main tower, while the themed & premium suites are in the located in the same area as Howlin’ Timbers Play Park. I love that idea as it makes you feel like you are in the center of the action and fun. During the tour, we were able to view the Wolf Den suite, which was really cute! The personal touches with the wolves on the wall paper and the lamps are adorable. SEE A PIC OF WOLF DEN BUNK BEDS The New England lodge offers all-new suite styles, which can be viewed here.

Water Park & Arcade

great wolf lodge new england photos

One of my favorite things about the lodge is the Northern Lights arcade. It is casino-style and has a lot more room than our lodge here at home. It has a great variety of games that appeals to all ages and great prizes. I could stay in the arcade all day long!

The water park  at Great Wolf Lodge New England has two sides instead of one.  One side has the wave pool, Howlin’ Tornado, Wolf Tail, etc. while the side across the hall has Fort Mackenzie, Crooked Creek and more. They also have an exclusive new water slide – Wolf Tail. I wanted to try it but I chickened out. 🙁  My husband was brave enough to test it out and loved it. You stand inside with a count down and the sound of a beating heart when the floor drops from under you and shoots you through 8-seconds of fun through  a tube! It also involves a 360-degree turn. My hubby was impressed with how smooth a ride it was and that his swim trunks stayed up :D.  I am hoping that if we return in the future, I will work up enough nerve to try it for myself. Their Howlin’ Tornado wasn’t as intimidating as ours and the River Canyon Run was just as fun.

The kids loved playing on Big Foot Pass and shooting basketball in the pool. I talked them into hanging out in Crooked Creek (lazy river) with me, which is one of my favorites. It’s so relaxing to just float around in an inner tube. Another family favorite is Slap Tail Pond (wave pool) and the kids had a ball. The waves seemed stronger here than at home, which my husband loved. He said it reminded him of the ocean and being at the beach.

The kids always enjoy the water park the most and could have stayed in the water our entire trip. The water park was clean, water was comfortable and the air temperature was perfect.

Howlin’ Timbers Play Park

Another New England exclusive is the Howlin’ Timbers Play Park which features the Howlers’ Peak Ropes Course. I did try this out before coming down due to having on the wrong shoes. I had on wedge sneakers – regular athletic sneakers are recommended for better traction on the ropes and safety. I did enjoy the time I was up there. It was fun – and a little scary at times lol. There are different paths you can take and it is up to you which way you choose. My husband and son had a ball. My daughter did one walk across before coming down. I give her an “A” for effort. It’s great that they have a smaller course for the little ones as well. However, if you have a little one that wants to go up with you on the bigger course, I was told that was fine.

We enjoyed a round of Howl at the Moon mini golf, which was a lot of fun. While we were playing, my husband kept remarking about how beautiful the course was. It was beautifully decorated and I love that it is indoors (ours is outside).  It’s great that the holes are not too challenging for the younger kids to enjoy and have fun with the adults and older children.

One of the big hits at the park was the Sonic All-Stars basketball game. My son is a Sonic fanatic and loved every minute of playing. I am a Connect Four fan and head straight for it at our Northern Lights Arcade here at home. I was disappointed I didn’t see it in the arcade but later discovered it in the park.

Scooops Kids Spa and Great Wolf Kids store

My daughter was given a complimentary Sprinkled in Scooops service and and Color-Your-Own pillowcase. She loved the spa service and tried to talk me into more – and a robe! The sprinkled in scooops service featured a scented hair spraying, lip gloss application, hand/arm massage with scented lotion, sash and crown. I loved how the service was done – it was so cute!

She could have colored her own T-Shirt but chose the pillowcase. That was a lot of fun! I enjoyed coloring with her and watching the bland white pillowcase come to life with the colors she chose.  It came out beautifully and I love that she has a keepsake from our time at the lodge.

We love our standard Great Wolf ears, but wanted something a little more girly and cute. I have seen the different ear styles of the Great Wolf Kids characters at home and wanted some Rachel ears. We had a pack member named Marisa who was sweet enough to offer to go to the Scooops spa and get a bow to tie onto my daughter’s ears. They gave it a great touch and was a hit at the lodge. Thanks to Marisa!

The Lodge Wood Fired Grill was amazing!! I am not a meat person; I stopped eating it for years. I just started eating some meat again a year or two ago and still do not eat it very often. So for me to eat chicken every day I was there and to try ribs too – it has to be GREAT. We tried the wing appetizers and quesadillas  which were delicious. I am very big on food being the correct temperature and everything was perfect. I had the Char-grilled chicken with mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach (one of my faves) and it was fantastic every time. My husband tried the steak, ribs and burger which he said were all seasoned to perfection. I can vouch for the ribs – they were melt in your mouth good! The kids enjoyed their mac and cheese, burgers and chicken as well. I am big fan of their mini desserts, as it is just enough! They offer amazing flavors such as S’mores, Raspberry Cheesecake and Berries Foster. Just like here at home, I would go to the lodge just to eat at the restaurant! The pizza at Hungy as a Wolf was also a hit with the family like always. I tried the fudge for the first time and it was out of this world. I love that it is made by the resort and only has 3 ingredients, with real butter being one of them. Dark chocolate was my favorite. We also tried the ice cream sundae which you can add the toppings yourself. One sundae was enough to share for two people. Yum! :p

great wolf lodge restaurant

We had a great time! We didn’t want to leave 🙁 The staff is so polite, interactive and accommodating. The lodge is wonderful and offers so much to do for the entire family. You will NEVER be bored while staying there! I am excited for the families in the New England area and beyond to experience what we do here at a home; a howlin’ good time and lots of family fun. I hope they love it as much as we do!

PrepareAThon Party Preps Hampton Roads For Hurricane Season

Kira Riley : June 3, 2014 1:35 pm : Community, Events, Kira's Korner

mrs. virginia international 2014 cheryl nelson

What more appropriate way to kick off the official start of the hurricane season than by a PrepareAThon Party?  On Sunday, June 1, Dave & Buster’s Virginia Beach hosted Coastal Virginia’s Hurricane PrepareAThon Party, organized by Mrs. Virginia International 2014, Cheryl Nelson. Nelson, a Smithfield resident, is a freelance broadcast meteorologist and ambassador for NOAA’s Weather Ready Nation. As a partner with IAEM & FEMA’s campaign, the title holder saw FEMA’s initiative as a perfect opportunity to help raise awareness about hurricane preparedness. “I thought, bring everyone together to have some fun and learn information about hurricane preparedness. Having a kit, having a family plan and knowing what your risks are.  Yes, we are prone to hurricanes in Coastal Virginia. People are more prone to learn by having some fun & winning prizes. That was the whole point of the party,” she shared.

With over 30 vendors, including American Red Cross, Survival Food Plan and Thrive Life, there was a wealth information available to help area residents to become informed and aware regarding storm preparation.  US 106.1‘s Dave Parker, a former meteorologist himself,  lent his voice and WAVY TV’s Don Slater, Jeremy Wheeler and Jeff Edmondson made appearances and signed autographs. Boy Scout Troop #63 from Virginia Beach led a preparedness demonstration, informing the crowd of what to do in different weather-related scenarios.  The event wrapped up with  great giveaways and prizes donated by attending vendors. From the freebies on vendors tables to the gift baskets, gift cards and even cash, attendees left with their hands full.

As Mrs. Virginia gave back to the area through the PrepareAThon party, if you would like to support her in return, you can head to her website, CherylNelsonVA.Com to support her efforts at the 2014 Mrs. International Pageant. The pageant will be held July 25-26, 2014 in Jacksonville, Florida. To vote for Cheryl online, click here.

[Review] London Rocks Busch Gardens Williamsburg

London Rocks Busch Gardens

On May 16, I had the opportunity to attend Media Day and see the first technical dress rehearsal of London Rocks™ at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. I have been anticipating the first public showing of London Rocks™ since our Hard Hat Media Tour last month. After getting a behind the scenes sneak peek of what was to come, it was exciting to see the sketches and the vision of the show come to life before our very eyes.  Like me, you may have a preconceived notion of what to expect when it comes to the show; I figured it would be a 25-minute medley of Beatles songs. However, London Rocks is an exciting and fun musical journey through British rock ‘n’ roll as it pertains to the main character – Lucy- with very well-chosen songs including hits from David Bowie, Queen and of course, The Beatles.

Lucy falls in love with rock ‘n’ roll. Photo by Kira Riley

The story draws you in as Lucy first discovers her love for rock ‘n’ roll music and how it becomes the soundtrack to her life. You see her fall in love with Guy, get married and have children, all in a span of a 27-minute well-woven story that flows seamlessly to up-beat British rock music.  Lucy and Guy express the emotional ups and downs of life through song and dance with a wonderful supporting cast along with beautiful animations on a monochromatic backdrop. The projections and lighting are very colorful, vivid and impeccably done. Instead of being a guest merely observing the show on the stage, you feel as if you are in the middle of your own awesome psychedelic dream. As Lucy life unfolds, you are treated to surprisingly funny and entertaining little quips from “Queen Elizabeth” via animations. From the lighting,  to the sound – and other little surprises – you truly are treated to a fully immersive experience that will have you wanting to come back for more.  Parents will enjoy the trip down memory lane as they remember songs from their youth. Some kids may even recognize some of the songs, especially “We Will Rock You” which is appropriately performed by the puppets during the under the sea scene. The show truly offers something for the entire family to enjoy.

As I shared in my previous post, London Rocks’ influence extends beyond the Globe Theater into the England village. The hamlet has received an English makeover with the addition of Union Snacks, a London Bus with show merchandise,  as well as the addition of London fare (fish & chips). London Rocks will officially make its debut on May 23.

To see all of the pictures from London Rocks, updates to England and  learn more about the show (Q&A with producers/cast and B-Roll from Busch Gardens), visit our Instagram and YouTube pages.

How to get tickets for London Rocks performances

The Globe Theatre opens approximately 30 minutes before each scheduled London Rocks performance. For guests’ convenience, complimentary tickets are distributed throughout the day from a ticket booth at the Globe Theatre’s main entrance. All London Rocks tickets are stamped for a specific show and are distributed on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. Guests can use the park’s map or Busch Gardens’ new smartphone app to see a daily show schedule. A ticket guarantees a seat only for the specific show printed on the ticket, and does not guarantee a particular seat inside the theater. Tickets are required for entry into the theater, and only one ticket per guest will be provided.  Unused tickets are not valid for any other show.

hampton roads uber service

I was invited to attend the launch party for Uber in Hampton Roads at Waterman’s  Surfside Grille in Virginia Beach. Uber is described as an affordable ride service that is a faster and cheaper option to get around town. UberX (their low-cost option) prides itself on being 22% cheaper than a taxi and is now available in Hampton Roads. They are still in the testing phase, so rides will not be available in every area. Uber urges users to check the app frequently for updated coverage.

In Hampton Roads, uberX includes ridesharing, offering Uber reliability with prices cheaper than a taxi. Drivers on uberX have mid-range or hybrid vehicles in a variety of colors and styles, with seating for up to four people. To maintain the Uber standard you expect, all drivers pass Uber’s rigorous screening process. In order to be an uberX driver in Hampton Roads, drivers must pass:

  • A stringent background check
  • A driving history check
  • Ongoing quality controls

You can download the app for free or sign up online here. There is still time to utilize their free rides in HRVA until May 15. Review: Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Presents LEGENDS

Kira Riley : April 24, 2014 4:26 pm : Entertainment, Featured, Kira's Korner, Reviews

LEGENDS at Hampton Coliseum. Photo by Kira Riley

After much anticipation, we were excited to finally see LEGENDS at Hampton Coliseum on April 16. Unfortunately, there was no animal open house for our show this year, so we headed straight inside to enjoy the all access pre-show. As always, it was great fun watching Clown Alley entertain with their goofy antics, seeing an elephant paint, as well as great photo ops with some of the performers.  After trying on costumes, taking pictures and getting tattoos, we headed to our seats to enjoy the show.

I always love the start of the show as the ringmaster (Johnathan Lee Iverson), leads the parade of all of the performers. It is an exciting preview of what is to come over the next two hours. LEGENDS features amazing acts who showcase their incredible talents to help summon the mystical Unicorn, Pegasus and Woolly Mammoth; which were all exciting to see! Another standout for me this year was the music; it was fantastic and kept the crowd pumped and going. Mr. Iverson did an awesome job of that as well, along with his sidekick Paulo dos Santos. The staging was another hit, as the elephants and the design of the entrance/exit for the performers this year looked GREAT!

One of my favorite parts of the show was the majestic and beautiful tigers (and a lion) along with trainer Alexander Lacy. I held my breath a few times watching their performance!

I was impressed by the Medeiros Troupe and their Hair Hang. You have to have some seriously strong hair to handle that! It gave me a headache just looking at them!

My daughter is an animal lover and had a ball watching Klose’s Performing K9s and Pigs.

We all enjoyed the elephants, always one of the highlights of the show!

It was hard to narrow down favorites, as there are so many wonderful acts to choose from. There was never a dull moment throughout the entire show. If you have a chance to see LEGENDS when it is in your town, do not miss it!

As a Feld Family Activator, I received complimentary tickets to the show. However, the opinion given is 100% my own.

If you have seen the show, what was your favorite part?

Colossal Curl Hard Hat Media Tour

Kira Riley : April 24, 2014 9:45 am : Entertainment, Featured, Kira's Korner

 colossal curl construction

As a 2014 Busch Gardens® Williamsburg & Water Country USA® Ambassador Blogger (The Thrill Chasers™),  I had the pleasure of attending the Colossal Curl Hard Hat Media Tour this past Tuesday.  We were able to hear from the masterminds behind this new massive undertaking, Jeff Thomas ( Water Country USA Vice President), Suzy Cheely (Director of Engineering) and Carl Lum (Park President). If you were unaware of the newest attractions coming to the parks, you DO NOT want to miss their debut on Memorial Day Weekend!

Colossal Curl™ is a thrill ride like no other as it is the ONLY ride of its kind in North America. After hearing about the different elements of the new water slide during the tour, I would liken it to a water coaster.  How cool is that?! The ride will shoot four riders (in a cloverleaf raft) through about 58 seconds of thrilling fun as they travel through light and dark elements in a tunnel towards a funnel and a “wave” along with a 45 degree drop. The latter features will offer a feeling of weightlessness. If it sounds a little intense – it is! But no need to be nervous. The ride manufacturer will test the slide first to ensure safety before turning it over to Water Country USA.

SLIDE LENGTH: 552.5 feet
SIZE OF FUNNEL ELEMENT: 1,400 square feet
RAFT TYPE: Cloverleaf
MANUFACTURER: Proslide Technology, Ottawa Canada
WHY THE COLORS YELLOW & BLUE: Wanted the slide to stand out, especially from the parking lot, to generate excitement.
WHY THE NAME COLOSSAL CURL?: Colossal due to the massive size of the ride and Curl due to the wave element.
WAIT TIME: The ride will accommodate 3 rafts at a time to keep the line down and things running smoothly

What Resurrection Means To Me

Kira Riley : April 18, 2014 12:28 pm : Faith & Inspiration, Kira's Korner

meaning of resurrection

2 Corinthians 5:15 New King James Version (NKJV)

15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.

John 3:16 New King James Version (NKJV)

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Today as we celebrate Good Friday, I am filled with so many emotions; love, joy, gratitude – excitement. I am excited about the significance of the next few days and what it means to me as a Christian. More than anything I am grateful to  my Heavenly Father that He saw fit to send His son to die for me. I have been walking this Christian road a majority of my life and I have made mistakes more than I can count. I know I haven’t always done or said the right thing and did not always represent Christ the way I should have. But on today, I am so grateful that despite my constant failings – which He knew would happen, that’s why He died – He still loves me. He still died for me. On the day we remember his death, I choose to bury every mistake, every sin and shortcoming I have committed and will commit, along with Him. I see the next few days as rebirth for all Christians and a wonderful opportunity for those who have not accepted Him to do so. I was listening to “Beautiful Son” by Joann Rosario and it is a beautiful reminder of the purpose of Jesus’ death and resurrection. It really blessed me and I hope it blesses you as well.

If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, there is no better time than the present!

Accept Jesus As Your Savior

Be Thankful For The Small Things

Kira Riley : April 2, 2014 11:52 am : Faith & Inspiration, Kira's Korner

As I sit here, I am reflecting on all that I have been through the past few months. I started off the first quarter of the year sick and in/out of the emergency room, urgent care and doctor’s office. Not exactly how I wanted to bring in 2014. As I have come out on the other side, I am reminded of how grateful I am to God for the little things that I can often take for granted. Before being diagnosed with achalasia two years ago, I never thought I would have to worry about being able to eat or drink – two basic functions necessary to sustain life, but something that some struggle with daily. Especially those with a motility disorder such as achalasia. Now that those functions have been restored, I am so thankful to God after every bite and sip that I am able to take.  It is easy to become overwhelmed in life and with life, that you lose sight of how blessed you truly are. It is easy to focus on every negative thing versus counting the positive. I can almost guarantee that the good will ALWAYS outweigh the bad.

I know many why wonder why I constantly focus on all that is good in my life versus the things that are wrong. Trust me, it is not for lack of things not being great, I just choose to focus on the good. I love the saying, “Being happy doesn’t mean everything is perfect, I just choose to look past the imperfections.”  That is my life motto and what I try to focus on daily. In the grand scale of things, no matter how bad things get, I am still blessed beyond measure and have no right to complain. It could always be worse. Trust me. There is also always someone who would love to trade places with you and take on what at the time may seem unbearable to you. It may be a cake walk for them, compared to what they are going through.  Next time, in the midst of the storm, instead of focusing on the rising wind and waves, keep your eyes on the captain of the ship. He won’t steer you wrong. There is purpose and power in the storm. Trust Him.

Reflection Verses

1 Thessalonians 5:18

Ephesians 5:20

Are you going through a tough time right now and finding it hard to remain positive/thankful? Write down what is troubling you and write down every thing you are thankful for. Release the negative to God and start thanking Him for every blessing. Thank Him for what you see now and for what you are expecting Him to do.

How do you remain thankful? Share your thoughts below.
